Vintage Cairns Bro Greenport Star Hose Fire Helmet Sanitary Liner Leather Badge

This listing is for a Cairns Bros molded fireman’s helmet with a Cairns Sanitary Liner with a leather helmet-badge and a matching metal breast or parade hat badge. The leather helmet-badge has GFD (Greenport Fire Department) which is located in Greenport on the north fork of the east end of Long Island. Also at the bottom of the helmet-badge is STAR (Star hose company) and also the number “3”. The helmet has a paper label on the inside that shows the helmet is a size 7 ½. The label is very brittle and tore when I pulled back the sanitary liner to inspect it. The paper pieces are all there, under the liner. It appears that the helmet had been repainted, probably a long time ago, and somewhat neatly so (they got some silver paint on the helmet-badge). The back of the helmet is black with two fireman’s megaphones, or speaking trumpets or horns decorations, in silver. The front is silver as is the underside. I’m not sure what the material used in making this helmet but it looks molded to me. I don’t think it’s leather or metal. The hat itself is in nice shape. The leather helmet-badge is nice but shows signs of delamination. The brass piece that holds the top of the helmet-badge is nice and has the standard fire dept cross with the letters FD. The other small metal hat badge also bears the number 3 and STAR HOSE, GREENPORT. The keeper nut on the back of the badge is stamped C. G. BRAXMAR 10 MAIDEN LANE, NY.
