    Description

Rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1910’s Native American Northern Plains / Sioux Indian Bead and Cowrie Shell Decorated, Fringed Trade Cloth Dress. This outstanding early 20th century Woman’s Size Sioux Dress measures approx. 41" long overall with a 32” chest. It measures 16” from armpit to armpit, 20” from shoulder seam to shoulder seam and 30 from sleeve opening to sleeve opening (not including the long, hide fringe). The decoration is all hand spot stitched and the Dress features extensive rawhide fringe to the openings of the arms and has a single line of rawhide drops at the chest and back below the cowrie shell lanes.
This wonderful Northern Plains Woman’s Size Dress is hand thread sewn and features spot stitched lanes of beadwork decoration across the front and back of the upper chest, at the border of the collar and around the arm openings. The beadwork is executed using yellow, cobalt blue, black and translucent amber colored seed and bugle beads. There is a stunning line of long, rawhide fringe at the arm openings. The Dress is made of red wool trade cloth and the yoke is lined with a heavy, muslin type cotton with patterned calico cloth trim. The front of the Dress is decorated with approx 115 cowrie shells and the back has approx 80 cowrie shells. There is also a lane of small fresh water clam shells along the shoulder line.
The Dress offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Sioux bead and cowrie shell decorated Wool Trade Cloth Dress crafted in the first quarter of the 20th century. The Dress comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This rare and very beautiful, ca1910’s Northern Plains / Sioux Bead and Cowrie Shell Decorated Dress is in very good to excellent condition. The wool trade cloth is very well preserved with no major damage but with some minimal and unobtrusive fading, some tiny and unobtrusive spots of staining and less than a handful of minuscule moth holes. There are no repairs or damage of any kind to the cloth elements. The beadwork is well preserved with no loss or damage. The hide fringe is also very well preserved with no damage or loss. There appears to be some minor loss to the cowrie shells perhaps half a dozen or so are missing but overall all of the decoration is exceptionally well preserved and the Dress is stunningly beautiful!!

    Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
